Cadmium Metal and Alloys
Cadmium is a soft, malleable, bluish-white metal, chemically similar to zinc and mercury. It is soft enough to be cut with a knife and resistant to corrosion. It is readily accessible as it occurs in concentrated ores and is easily extracted by heating the oxide with carbon and distilling the metal. It has an abundance in the earth's crust of 0.11 ppm. Cadmium forms various compounds. For example, cadmium sulfide (CdS) is used as a photoconductive surface coating for photocopier drums and as a yellow pigment. Cadmium selenide (CdSe) can be used as red pigment, commonly called cadmium red. However, its high toxicity means that its use is now becoming increasingly restricted.
