Cryolite is a naturally occurring fluorine-containing mineral composed of sodium, aluminum and fluoride (Na3AlF6) that is used as a raw material in the electrolytic production of aluminum metal and other aluminum compounds. It is added to the electrolyte in aluminum electrolysis cells to reduce the melting point of the electrolyte, allowing it to be easily vaporized. Cryolite is also used in glazes, enamels and glass coloring agents. Because of its stable structure, it is not easily attacked by acidic or alkaline solutions.
