Product Code : EM-HfC-5N-Cu
Hafnium Carbide (HfC) is a chemical compound comprised of carbon and hafnium, a transition metal found on the fourth period of group four on the periodic table. It is a refractory ceramic compound with a melting point of 5400°C. HfC is a very hard material with a hardness of approximately 9.1 on the Mohs scale. Due to these properties it is often used in industrial applications such as cutting tools, thermal protection materials and heat sinks. This versatile material is also used in vacuum thin film deposition as a source material for evaporation. The highly evaporable HfC material has a low vapor pressure and can be evaporated within a wide temperature range (obtained between 1700°C and 2300°C). When evaporating HfC, the results are usually clear and highly reflective. In addition, HfC coatings are highly resistant to oxidation, providing excellent protection to the underlying substrate material.
