Magnesium fluoride (MgF2) is a semiconductor material which can be used in evaporation processes. It is commonly utilized in optical coatings, coatings for planarizing surfaces and waveguiding materials. It is highly transparent in the visible and near infrared ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum, with a wide transmission range extending far into the ultraviolet (UV) region. It has a high refractive index required for efficient reflection and absorption of UV radiation. Its properties make it useful in the formation of optical and waveguiding surfaces such as optical filters, mirrors, gratings and prisms.
