It is sometimes referred to as monosilicon dioxide or quasisilicon dioxide. SiO is found in nature primarily as sand and quartz, but can also be synthesized in laboratories. SiO is made of silicon and oxygen atoms combined in a 1:1 ratio and has a molecular weight of 44.08 g/mol. It has a melting point of 1500°C and a boiling point of 2743°C. SiO is often used as the substrate material in an evaporative process due to its high thermal stability and good reaction with metal compounds. It is also used in optical coatings and filter production. Sources of SiO can come either in solid labeled material or as liquid solution.
