Yttrium oxide (Y2O3) is an inorganic compound used in a variety of industrial and commercial applications. Y2O3 is a white or yellowish powder commonly used as an evaporating material, or “evap”, in physical vapor deposition (PVD) and sputtering applications. Y2O3 is a good oxide of choice as it can be easily deposited, it is highly reactive, and is relatively stable to atmospheric and thermal conditions. Y2O3 is also considered an insulating material, so it can be used to prevent corrosion or abrasion on the material it is being deposited onto. Y2O3 can be evaporated in an open or closed chamber, and it is not recommended to be done in a vacuum due to its explosive properties.
