Product Code : RE-La-5N-CU
Lanthanum (La) is is a soft, ductile, silvery-white metal that belongs to the lanthanide series. Lanthanum has numerous applications as additives in glass, catalysts, ignition elements in lighters and torches, carbon arc lamps for studio lights and projectors, electron cathodes, gas tungsten arc welding electrodes, scintillators, and other things.
At temperatures above 440 ° C lanthanum burns to lanthanum oxide (La2O3). The formation of hydrogen in cold water is slow, in warm water a rapid reaction to the hydroxide. In dilute acids, lanthanum dissolves under evolution of hydrogen. With many elements it reacts directly in the heat, with halogens even at room temperature. Lanthanum and hydrogen form a black, water-sensitive unstoichiometric hydride.
Lanthanum Metal is available as disc, granules, ingot, pellets, pieces, powder , rod, sputtering target, wire, and in numerous other forms and custom shapes. Lanthanum metal is predominantly used in the production of mischmetal and steel additives but is also important in the production of hydrogen storage alloys for nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Typical and custom packaging is available. Ultra high purity and high purity forms also include metal powder, submicron powder and nanoscale, quantum dots, targets for thin film deposition, pellets for evaporation and single crystal or polycrystalline forms. Elements can also be introduced into alloys or other systems as fluorides, oxides or chlorides or as solutions. Lanthanum metal is generally immediately available in most volumes. Lanthanum is used in cracking catalysts, advanced ceramics and in green phosphors. Lanthanide zirconates and lanthanum strontium manganites are used for their catalytic and conductivity properties. Lanthanum's ability to bind with phosphates in water creates uses in water treatment.

Lanthanum (La) Metal Application
Lanthanum metal has no commercial uses. However, its alloys have a variety of uses. A lanthanum-nickel alloy is used to store hydrogen gas for use in hydrogen-powered vehicles. Lanthanum is also found in the anode of nickel metal hydride batteries used in hybrid cars.
Lanthanum is an important component of mischmetal alloy (about 20%). The best-known use for this alloy is in 'flints' for cigarette lighters.
'Rare earth' compounds containing lanthanum are used extensively in carbon lighting applications, such as studio lighting and cinema projection. They increase the brightness and give an emission spectrum similar to sunlight.
Lanthanum(III) oxide is used in making special optical glasses, as it improves the optical properties and alkali resistance of the glass. Lanthanum salts are used in catalysts for petroleum refining.
The ion La3+ is used as a biological tracer for Ca2+, and radioactive lanthanum has been tested for use in treating cancer.
