Neodymium is soft, silvery white metal but it quickly forms an oxide coating when exposed to air and tarnishes extremely quickly. Unlike most metals the oxide coating doesn't protect Neodymium from further oxidisation. This metal is abundant in the earth's crust but it is considered a lanthanide (rare earth metal). This is because it is usually found in ores and not in its metal form.

Typical Applications for Neodymium (Nd) Metal

Neodymium is one of the rare chemicals, that can be found in houses in equipment such as colour televisions, fluorescent lamps, energy-saving lamps and glasses. All rare chemicals have comparable properties. Nedymium is one of the several metals in alloys commonly used in lighter flints. The most important alloys is neodymium, iron and boron (NIB), found to make excellent permanent magnets.  They are used in computers, cell phones, medical equipment, toys, motors, wind turbines and audio systems.

In nickel metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries for hybrid automobiles. The negative electrode (cathode) in NiMH batteries is a mixture of metal hydrides – typically a rare earth misch metal hydride containing praseodymium, neodymium, lanthanum and cerium.

As a crystal (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet) is it used in lasers. These lasers have numerous applications. For example, they are used in medicine to treat skin cancers and for laser hair removal; and in industry they are used to cut and weld steel.

Neodymium is used to make specialised goggles for glass blowers.

Neodymium salts are used to colour glasses and enamels.

Typical bulk packaging includes palletized plastic 5 gallon/25 kg. pails, fiber and steel drums to 1 ton super sacks in full container (FCL) or truck load (T/L) quantities. Research and sample quantities and hygroscopic, oxidizing or other air sensitive materials may be packaged under argon or vacuum. Solutions are packaged in polypropylene, plastic or glass jars up to palletized 440 gallon liquid totes Special package is available on request.
