Scandium fluoride (ScF3) powder is a white ionic compound with a cubic crystal structure and is slightly soluble in water. For example, researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics used magnesium fluoride in 2013 to create a novel mid-infrared optical frequency comb composed of crystalline micro-resonators, an advance that could lead to future developments in molecular spectroscopy.
