Samarium (Sm) Metal

Product Code : RE-Sm-5N-CU

Samarium is a silvery-white metal and a member of the lanthanoid group of the Periodic Table and the 40th most abundant element within the Earth’s crust. Samarium Metal tarnishes in the air, and it is relatively hard. Its hardness and density are similar to zinc. Samarium Metal has primarily been utilized in the production of Samarium-Cobalt (Sm2Co17) permanent magnets with one of the highest known demagnetization resistance. High purity Samarium Metal is also used in making specialty alloy and sputtering targets. Samarium-149 has a high cross-section for neutron capture (41,000 barns) and is therefore used in nuclear reactors' control rods. Samarium Metal can be further processed into various shapes, like sheets, wires, foils, slabs, rods, discs, and powder.

Applications of Samarium (Sm) Metal

Samarium Metal has primarily been utilized in the production of Samarium-Cobalt (Sm2Co17) permanent magnets with one of the highest resistances to demagnetization known. High purity Samarium Metal is also used in making specialty alloy and sputtering targets. Samarium-149 has a high cross-section for neutron capture (41,000 barns) and is therefore used in the control rods of nuclear reactors. Samarium Metal can be further processed to various shapes of sheets, wires, foils, slabs, rods, discs, and powder.

Samarium is used as a catalyst in certain organic reactions: the samarium iodide (SmI2) is used by organic research chemists to make synthetic versions of natural products. The oxide, samaria, is used for making special infrared adsorbing glass and cores of carbon arc-lamp electrodes and as a catalyst for the dehydration and dehydrogenation of ethanol. Its compound with cobalt (SmCo5) is used in making a new permanent magnet material.

Samarium Metal Sm is applied in petroleum and environment protection catalysts, mischmetal, polishing powders and Rare Earth fertilizers.

Packing of Samarium (Sm) Metal

Standard Packing:

Typical bulk packaging includes palletized plastic 5 gallon/25 kg. pails, fiber and steel drums to 1 ton super sacks in full container (FCL) or truck load (T/L) quantities. Research and sample quantities and hygroscopic, oxidizing or other air sensitive materials may be packaged under argon or vacuum. Solutions are packaged in polypropylene, plastic or glass jars up to palletized 440 gallon liquid totes Special package is available on request.
