Product Code : RE-Y-5N-CU
Yttrium is a highly crystalline iron-gray, rare-earth metal. Yttrium is fairly stable in air, because it is proteced by the formation by the formation of a stable oxide film on its surface, but oxidizes readily when heated. It reacts with water decomposing it to release hydrogen gas, and it reacts with mineral acids. Shavings or turnings of the metal can ignite in air when they exceed 400 °C. When yttrium is finely divided it is very unstable in air. In metallurgy, small additions of yttrium are used for grain refinement, for example in iron-chromium-aluminium heating wire alloys, chromium, molybdenum, titanium and zirconium alloys. It has a strength-increasing effect in aluminium and magnesium alloys.
Yttrium Metal is available as disc, granules, ingot, pellets, pieces, powder, rod, sputtering target, wire, and in numerous other forms and custom shapes. Ultra high purity and high purity forms also include metal powder, submicron powder and nanoscale, quantum dots, targets for thin film deposition, pellets for evaporation and single crystal or polycrystalline forms. Elements can also be introduced into alloys or other systems as fluorides, oxides or chlorides or as solutions. Yttrium metal is generally immediately available in most volumes. Yttrium has the highest thermo-dynamic affinity for oxygen, useful in ceramics for crucibles for molten reactive metals, in florescent phosphors, computer displays and automotive fuel sensors. Yttria stabilized zirconia is used in high temperature applications and as an electrolyte in fuel cells.
Our yttrium metal is available in many shapes and specifications.

Reactivity Profile
Yttrium in bulk is stable in air due to the formation of oxide films. Powder or dust is light-sensitive and air-sensitive and flammable in the air and (Hazardous Chemicals Desk Reference, p. 861(1987)). Reacts with water to form gaseous hydrogen (H2). Reacts with strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, strong bases, and halogens. The products of these reactions are irritating and toxic.
Yttrium Metal Applications
The largest use of the element is as its oxide yttria, Y2O3, which is used in making red phosphors for color television picture tubes.
Yttrium metal has found some use alloyed in small amounts with other metals and It is used to increase the strength of aluminium and magnesium alloys.
When added to cast iron it make the metal more workable. Although metals are generally very good at conducting heat, there is an alloy of yttrium with chromium and aluminium which is heat resistant.
Yttrium oxide in glass makes it heat- and shock-resistant, and is used for camera lenses.
Yttrium oxide is suitable to making superconductors, which are metal oxides which conduct electricity without any loss of energy.
Packing of Yttrium Metal
Standard Packing:
Typical bulk packaging includes palletized plastic 5 gallon/25 kg. pails, fiber and steel drums to 1 ton super sacks in full container (FCL) or truck load (T/L) quantities. Research and sample quantities and hygroscopic, oxidizing or other air sensitive materials may be packaged under argon or vacuum. Solutions are packaged in polypropylene, plastic or glass jars up to palletized 440 gallon liquid totes Special package is available on request.
ATTs’Yttrium Metal is carefully handled to minimize damage during storage and transportation and to preserve the quality of our products in their original condition.
